title: twilight
author: stephanie myer
genre: romance
rating: ★★★☆☆
this is SO atrociously bad that its so good.. i havent read this much in a long time LMAO. i think its even weirder when i learned that the author got the idea in her dreams. she dreamt of an attractive teenage vampire.. at 29.. okay. with the way bella's written i wouldnt be too shocked if this was a self-insert either. its been ages since ive read a main character thats a quirky nerd who trips and falls all the time but shes actually a genius and so hot that every boy wants her. this shouldve been a wattpad fanfic omg. ive been tabbing the book as i go, so im going to point out some of the worst (best) scenes:
-edward playing classical music and being shocked that bella knows clair de lune.. one of the most popular classical pieces ever..
-bella literally flirting with a 15 year old jacob to get info out of him - and it WORKING? the first time they meet too oml
-bella thinking that the cullens' names are so old and outdated. some of the names being 'alice' and 'jasper'..
-"i wasn't interesting. and he was. interesting...and brilliant...and mysterious...and perfect..and beautiful..."
also theres no real reason WHY she fell in love with him? hes just handsome and said he felt bad that her parents suck. oh and stopped her from being rammed by a car i guess. so romantic..
title: morbidly curious
author: coltan scrivner
genre: non-fiction
rating: ★★★★☆
borrowed this book from my mom, and i can understand why she liked it! its so interesting to read about why humans like horror from a psychological and evolutionary perspective.. at times it does feel ranty and filled with side-tangents, but overall i enjoy that it doesnt read like a boring scientific paper. for some reason most of the reviews i saw said that this read like a thesis, which i can not see AT ALL..? the language is really understandable and almost slangy, so its super easy to get through ! it reminds me a bit of the book 'cultish' which i highly highly recommend ^^
title: the house with a clock in its walls
author: john bellairs
genre: fantasy, middle grade
rating: ★★★★☆
jack black in a cozy middle grade novel.. what more could i want ?? seriously though, i highly recommend reading a middle grade low-stakes book every one and a while. its such a good break wow. the house in this novel is so richly described, im SO jealous. the way the author describes even the FIREPLACE MANTLES is so yummy gosh. im also really happy that the main character is kind of an awkward, chubby little boy that sucks at sports, and loves reading history books.. my only gripe with this book is that the plot just SPEEDS THROUGH. theres no time to sit and maybe get a glass of hot tea, its just bam bam bam main plot point after main plot point. i understand that its a pretty short book, and its audience probably doesnt have the kind of attention span to deal with that, but it really destroyed the atmosphere for me. because everything had so much pressure, it made everything seem less important. but besides that, if you want a short book with a nice atmosphere and smooth, easily-digestable language, this is my no.1 pick !
title: kokoro
author: natsume soseki
genre: literary, classic lit
rating: ★★★★☆
wonderfully slow and tragic. i hated everyone in this ♡ natsume soseki seriously knows how to write flawed human characters. but i was DRAGGING myself through this.. unless you can handle a book solely about totally non-homoerotic guys just going through life and sometimes having deep conversations, i can not recommend this for you. this is soseki's more philosophical book, so maybe ill like his more light-hearted books..? i did really like the trope of a naive admiring younger man x a cynical older man. i also highly highly recommend shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu ost while reading this, its SUCH a banger soundtrack. actually just listen to it either ways. its so good..
title: the dentist
author: tim sullivan
genre: mystery, fiction
rating: ★★★★☆
im a SUCKERRR for a weird detective !!! the characters are all quite charming, and the plot is really digestible and keeps you hooked. i will say, the author went a bittt too far in basing DS Cross's personality in his autism. it tried almost too hard to be woke, and dragged down the story a bit. it felt like every paragraph the author explained some symptom of autism, almost trying to justify the character's ASD. it reads like he googled top ten common autism symptoms and made sure to write about it as obviously as possible in the novel. the character that gets ARRESTED on SUSPICION OF MURDER sits down for an interview with the mc, and i kid you not the first thing he says to the man thats LITERALLY QUESTIONING HIM FOR MURDER is - "do you have OCD?".... i understand that its hard to develop a character's quirks, but plainly saying it over and over is not fun for the reader. i mean, besides that, i enjoyed it. i liked the way the story developed. and i mean its the thought that counts ? maybe im just tired of the trope of a quirky detective..
